Description

This is finely carved Netsuke depicting Baku, supernatural being with a lion's body and an elephant head that is said to devour nightmares.
Baku's body is twisted, its head turned back to touch the tip of its erect tail.
Might be dated as an early 19th century.
Some subjects are infrequently encountered in netsuke and therefore more desirable. Such is the case with the mythical beast called a Baku.
