    Description

Vintage Museum Replica NETSUKE SCHOLAR, Resin Figure & Wooden Stand
This handsome Netsuke museum replica was purchased over 40 years ago in the late 1970’s. The resin figure depicts a scholar standing with scrolls resting in his left arm. He wears an ornately patterned black and white kimono with a red obi around the waist. The Netsuke is approximately 3" tall, 1 1/2” wide and 1" deep. It rests upon its own wooden stand and is signed on the bottom with a traditional Japanese chop.
The traditional Japanese kimonos did not have pockets, and Netsuke were devised as a means to secure pouches to carry personal items. While created as a practical devise to fill a need for over 300 years, Netsukes evolved into a unique form of miniature sculptures.
