Description
This Walker China 6 oz. ivory conical coffee cup was made for Amherst College in Amherst, MA. It bears a mulberry or purple transfer depicting the campaign of Baron Jeffrey Amherst against Native Americans during the French and Indian Wars. Realizing that this image depicts a massacre, the college removed this pattern from service in the early 1970s. It appears that most of this ware was produced by Syracuse China, and this is the first piece that we have seen made by Walker. We have no idea how much was produced by Walker in relation to the quantity made by Syracuse. The cup appears to be little used and is in excellent condition.
The glaze is smooth, shiny and slippery all-over with the slightest signs of use on the upper rim and handle. There is a very tiny "flea bite" on the upper rim that could have occurred during the first use. It measures 3" tall, 3
¼" across the rim, and 2" across the foot. We do not have a matching saucer, but this shape cup was often used without one. The date code, 12-43, is for December 1965.
